Self Review

For about a month now we have been doing the targets diary. Thanks to this exercise I have come to realize some basic flaws with the way I manage my time and some other inconsistencies in my study habits. As a whole, my study habits are nonexistent, I study in bed or lying in the couch, at the stupidest times possible, and I usually have the TV or my laptop right next to me, luring me away, and yes, I tend to do the homework and other assignments just before the deadline. Since we started doing the targets diary I have been able to notice this and start working on some of these issues. I have (better or worse) set up a study area in which I actually go and do most of my studying. I have started to do my homework and assignments well ahead, the homework on the day it was assigned, if possible, or during the free periods that I have during the week, and even during work breaks. I have a new habit that I'm not sure if it is good, or not: whilst doing my assignments, if I get stuck somehow, rather than going away for a few minutes and get back to it (which usually meant watching some TV or reading a bit), I have actually started jumping to other homework or assignments and got to do them, or if not, going on the internet to browse some information related to the subject in hand. So, all and all, I believe I am doing alright, my study habits have improved because of having to face regularly what I achieve during the week and not, and it has also helped me tackle some other issues such as my never making it on time.

Yeah!!!

Hey, I'm in!!!
I can post over here same as everyboy else!!!
This is what my targets were last week:

1> Finish the assignements... I did do them, but for the literature one, which I have misplaced, so I need to da again, and by tomorrow!!!
2> Do all the homework... Yes!!!
3> Organise my notes... They're in the right folder, that's all I can say...

So, to be true, I can do more, i just usually too tired, or busy with something else. I'm still not really used to being back in fultime education, and that means I find it a bit hard to sit down and dong my homework and stuff, rather than just sitting down and watch some telly, read a book, etc. I lack the discipline, and sometimes the drive, for if you're not feeling up for it, the only person to encourage you, is your own self, adn sometimes it's just too easy leving thing for "tomorrow" and just relax for a wee while, which becomes a long while more often than not.
Last week I managed to get the two essays done, so that was one of my main targets done.

I also found out that Jerry did his masters in Irish Literature and History, which means I ask him some questions if I need help with my investigating Europe project, which is on how the British invasion of Ireland was viewed in the 1800's and now.I also managed to get to the poetry library, so have now got another bit for the investigating Europe topic to research. I didn't get round to filling in the sheets for that so will do that tonight.

I managed to study some of the tenses in Spanish and did the homework.

French homework is still waiting to be done, so will tackle that tonight along with the Investigating Europe sheets.

I also need to read chapter 2 of the history book tonight, as well as doing my Spanish homework from today.

This week, I will also try to decide what I want to do for the opinion based essay that Jerry wants by December 10, and possibly start researching, will blog how far I get tomorrow, and then I'll say whether I'm committed to that for this week as well.

Study Skills week ending 5 October

Managed to do tasks and reviews for Maths and Spanish, however as far as Investigating Europe project I seem to postpone starting to do the research. And I found out that I spent quite a fair part of my time thinking what to do. I shall have to work more on organizing my time more efficiently.

My study plan

ACCESS TO LANGUAGES

STUDY SKILLS DIARY

WEEK BEGINNING: 29/09/2008

Targets for the week

Target
To do Communication essay for Jerry for Thursday, will start it early tomorrow morning at library to get it started
Progress
It’s not been started yet, need to get a move on with this really. I do have ideas it’s just writing them down, I’ve had a block on this essay for a while, I think once I start it will be easier. That’s what I found with the essay for literature.
Target

Do Spanish homework tonight, looking at corrections needed to previous homework, and then giving advice on other 3 problems in Activity 5 for tomorrow.
Progress

Started it at the weekend, was supposed to be for yesterday, but seen as not enough people in Advanced higher had even attempted to start it, has been delayed till tomorrow.

Target

To look over Maths on Thursday night along with French homework.

Progress
Started looking over it at the weekend in preparation for next week’s second test. Revision for last outcome paid off, I got full marks. So guess I should continue how I started. I will start Higher French this afternoon so don’t doubt there will be homework for it.

Target

Read over Chapter 2 of History book. We don’t have a history lesson this week although I’ll probably look over both the 1st and 2nd chapter again before the weekend.

Progress

Reading 1st chapter as a refresher, we did discuss democracy in class, will probably look over history notes.

Target
Need to look over subjunctive mood for this week, and some prepositions as well as doing some revisions of other tenses like conditional, imperfect and irregular verbs conditional, aim to look over that for 2 hours on Friday afternoon.

Progress

I haven’t managed to do much on this due to the literature essay and having an outcome to pass for literature as well as the maths outcome to pass as well. So will make concerted effort to resolve this as it’s causing trouble with my written assignments, which is what we’ve had so far.

Target

Investigating Europe, will do the rest of the sheets required before having a personal interview tomorrow with Jo.

Progress

I haven’t managed to complete them all so far due to the same above reason. Therefore will fix this tonight as it’s due for tomorrow.

Spanish – more practice and do listening of Pimsleurs programme at least 30 mins a day. Repeat all new words and the old ones as well.
Investigating Europe – To write a plan for the presentation. Also speak to Joe about the plan, maybe he will be able to make some points and help with the layout.
Literature – I have completed the homework already!!!!!! And there is nothing so far given to do!
Maths – do at least one drop in class, and do the homework so I can discuss with the tutor what I need to look at more.

general

I hope you are all enjoying the access course so far. We have a great mix of students from many cultures and backgrounds and I hope to get a chance to know you all in the course of my studies. I'd like to make a suggestion that we can arrange a study group if anyone is interested, as a problem shared is a problem is a problem halved. It will also probably be the case that each of us have aptitudes for subjects which others don't have and vice versa. Anyway, I hope that we can all see this course through to its conclusion and progress to univesity. p.s. this blogging thing is completely new to me and I hope I am not the only one. Good luck to you all and see you soon.

09-09-08 - Spanish Internet Time

Today during class I planned to go on the BBC website in order to catch up on some basic Spanish. I felt this website was really useful as it taught me a lot of good vocabulary and some good sentences. The website I think works very well because it teaches you the words and makes you do activities so they stay in your mind. Also the fact that it uses sound files helps with the pronunciation and gets you used to listening to Spanish. A negative point was that a some of it was a bit different than what the rest of the class had learned but that was more my error of choice, had I picked a more relevant topic from the list I'm sure this would not have been a problem! For the last ten minutes just to change it a little I went on a newspapers website and tried to read a soccer article about a famous player on international duty, to be perfectly honest I understood next to nothing I understood only a few things due to my knowledge of soccer not my knowledge of Spanish.

What have I done for the past 2 hours?

My plan was to take a random article from a newspaper in Spanish language, try to read it and understand it. So I've choosen the one about the huricane "Ike" in Cuba and I was surprised how much of it I was able to understand. I took all the vocabulary I thought might be useful for me and saved it in a file on my pen drive.
I did not fully use my time,as I was jumping from one website to another and waisted quite a lot of time, but I learned some new words.
That's all.
